Shakespeare and Faith – Discussion on Zoom, held on Mondays, May 8 and 15 from 8:00 – 9:30pm.

Led by Donovan Sherman, Member of Christ Church and Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies, Department of English, Seton Hall University.

We have all probably read or seen Shakespeare in our lifetime. Perhaps we remember his work as difficult and antiquated and would rather not return to it anytime soon. This Zoom discussion group hopes to reclaim Shakespeare as a vital and urgent spiritual voice for our present moment.  Join us for conversations on how Shakespeare’s capacious, humane, curious, and restless body of work gives us a framework to ask profound questions both timeless and timely: how can I believe in divinity when confronted with atrocity? Can love and trust act as forms of political action? Can I ever truly be forgiven by those I have hurt? Don’t worry, there won’t be any homework—though you are welcome to read all you want! I will distribute smaller selections for us to read and talk over. Our aim is to find resonance with the same ideas that keep us returning to church, and to find in his poetic language a reflection of our own spiritual journeys.
