1976 Centennial Celebration

We commemorated our 100th anniversary with a year-long Centennial Celebration in 1976. During that jubilee, members prepared a short history of the church. Much has changed at Christ Church since then, but much has remained the same.

As was true in 1876, 1976, and today: “all are welcome to come here, drop their labels, and be. [We] sing and dance together, celebrate the good gift of life, break bread, ponder the eternal mysteries, mourn the inevitable losses, and set about the tasks of making life human and sacred … this place is special.”

This place is special, and as we enter our 150th year, we pray that we continue to embody the fruits of the spirt. Find welcome here, with us.

1904 Dedication

Christ Church began worship services in 1876 when the West Presbyterian Church of Summit offered the 14-strong congregation of the First Baptist Church its empty meeting house on Springfield Avenue. In 1904, our current church building on the corner of New England Avenue and Springfield Avenue in Summit, N.J. was dedicated. A five day celebration ensued! In 1958, the First Baptist Church was renamed “Christ Church” after the membership voted to affiliate with the Congregational-Christian Churches. The new name was chosen to reflect the broad ecumenical background of its members.
